Olivia's Nashville Hot Chicken Recipe

Updated: Aug 31, 2022

This is a simple and flavorful twist on fried chicken! All the credit for this amazing culinary invention goes to the folks at Prince's Hot Chicken Shack. Listen to owner, Andre Prince Jeffries, explain the origin of hot chicken to Southern Living magazine here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScyRhSldvRs

When I can't get my hands on the real deal, I whip up a little something myself and settle for homemade--which, I must say is DELICIOUS but no where near close to that hot (okay okay sometimes* I get medium) chicken from Prince's. This is for all of us who are longing to be in Nashville...

Nashville Hot Chicken

Course: Main Cuisine: American Prep Time: 10 Minutes

Cooking Time: 40 Minutes Servings: 8 people

Ingredients:

(On the real, I don't use precise measurements, but I put them here for shits and giggles. Use your own discretion!)

2 table spoon hot paprika

1 table spoon smoked paprika (exclude if you don't want a smokey taste)

1 table spoon cayenne pepper

1/2 table spoon onion powder

1/2 table spoon garlic powder

1/2 table spoon seasoning salt

a couple glugs of hot sauce (of all the mainstream brands in the supermarket, I prefer Cholula)

1 table spoon brown sugar

the grease from your frying pan

pickles

white bread (for soaking up juices!)

4/5 fried chicken pieces (ya'll gotta fry that up yourself!)

Sunflower oil

Method:

  1. Pour oil into pan on low heat

  2. Grab a chicken and carefully place it in the pan of hot oil

  3. Turn the chicken whilst its being fried make sure its carefully browning on all sides

  4. Fry it for 10 minutes on medium heat

  5. Once its cooked through

  6. Mix all wet and dry ingredients together and take your already crispy fried chicken and coat in the sauce you've created! Garnish with a pickle on top and lay across a slice of white bread. YUM.
